John Keble Church on the corner of Deans Lane and Church Close, in Mill Hill, a suburb on the North West edge of London, England. It was completed in 1936 and was regarded at the time as a startlingly modern building.  It was built to serve the people who moved into the area between the centre of Mill Hill and the streets around Edgware Station, as it was being developed in the years between the two great wars.  Most of our present congregation live within this area, but some come from further away.  You are very welcome at all our services, and the wide range of church organisations and activities.

Notices (week ending 6th July, 2008)

1. There will be a West Barnet Deanery Barbecue at St Mary at the Cross on Friday July 11th.  Tickets are £8 and are available from Steve Yates
2.

The way in which we celebrated our Patronal Festival in several recent years has been such a resounding success that we will be following the same pattern again.  It will take place two weeks today, on Sunday July 13th.  The service (which will be a Parade service) will be held an hour later than usual, at 10.30 a.m.  This is so as to make it possible for the service to be followed by a Parish Lunch.

The form of the lunch will be “Bring and share”.  Each person or family is asked to bring one of a main course dish, a salad or a desert.  Because you will be bringing one of the three options, please bring enough to feed three times as many people as there are in your family or group.  You are encouraged to bring a dish that is typical of your own cultural or culinary tradition.

To help with the planning, please tell Maggi Lamb in advance how many of you will be coming and which of main course, salad or desert you plan to bring.  Sylvia Daker is present and happy to receive this information today.

We are also asking everybody to bring something to drink.  We shall put this on a table to be shared as well, trusting that we shall produce the right kind of mix of drinks suitable for a gathering of both adults and children.

3.

Harvest Fair and Flower Festival Do please tell as many people as possible about our Harvest Fair and Flower Festival on October 3rd to 5th.  This will incorporate some familiar elements from previous Christmas Fairs but within an entirely new three-day format.

On Friday the Church will be open from 1 to 5 p.m.  There will be a large number of special flower displays on the theme “Harvest Around the World” and many stalls open (cakes and preserves, stationery and cards, beauty box, jewellery, garden products).  Tea and cakes will be served under the gallery at the back.

On Saturday the Church will again be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. so that people can view the Flower Festival and visit all the stalls that were open the day before.  There will also be a further range of stalls in the Hall (sweets, balloons, gifts, “cottage industry”, crafts, toys, books, raffle, tombola and assorted games) and both lunch and tea will be served there.  In the evening there will be a “Harvest Hoedown” (supper and barn dance) in the Hall at 7 p.m.

On Sunday we shall hold our usual Harvest Festival Parade Service in Church at 10.30 p.m.  The Flower Festival will remain on display all day.  There will be a sit-down lunch (a Hog Roast) and many games and competitions during the afternoon.  Tickets for Sunday lunch and Saturday evening must be purchased in advance (£10 adults, £5 children, 10% discount if both events bought together).

We are seeking a wide variety of recipes for an international John Keble Cookery Book [please give them to Maggi Lamb or Michael Buck or e-mail them to recipe@johnkeble.org.uk].  Some pictures are being taken for a John Keble Calendar.  Both will be on sale at the Harvest Fair.  The next planning meeting for this big event will be held on Wednesday July 2nd at 8 p.m.  All welcome.

The P.C.C. has agreed to a suggestion that we produce a Cookbook for sale over this weekend. The theme of the weekend is to be Harvest around the world, so it is appropriate that recipes should come from as many different parts of the world as possible. Ideally you recipes should be typed out and attached to an email to recipe@johnkeble.org.uk but we can cope with handwritten ones as well.

4. Parade Services The next two Parade Services will be held on Sunday July 13th (Patronal Festival) and Sunday October 5th (Harvest Festival). Both of these services will be at the later time of 10.30 a.m. so as to lead into lunch afterwards.
